Abstract

Researchers at an Emergency Department reported a case of airway obstruction caused by the accidental ingestion of super-absorbent polymers (SAPs), leading to fatal asphyxiation in a 76-year-old woman with Alzheimer's dementia. The study highlights the potential dangers of SAPs when ingested and emphasizes the importance of keeping such products out of reach of vulnerable populations. The research suggests that in cases of airway obstruction, emergency tracheotomy may be necessary, and experimental data propose the use of warm alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution to dissolve obstructive foreign bodies.
