Abstract

A study conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia examined the prevalence, trends, and outcomes of same-day discharge following elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in six public hospitals. The study found that the overall prevalence of same-day discharge was 6.5%, with an increasing trend from 0.2% in 2013 to 9.0% in 2019. The study also revealed that same-day discharge reduced the length of hospital stay by 18 hours and resulted in cost savings of $3695 per patient compared to next-day discharge. The researchers concluded that there is a need for strategies to implement and promote same-day discharge to improve hospital resource utilization and reduce low-value care.
