Abstract

Mozambicans voted for a new leader in an election that will determine the country's future amidst an insurgency that has halted major liquefied natural gas projects. The frontrunner is Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the Liberation Front of Mozambique, which has ruled the country since independence in 1975. The gas projects, which were expected to lift millions out of poverty, have been delayed due to attacks by an Islamic State-backed group. The election also features Ossufo Momade, president of the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana party, and Venâncio Mondlane, an independent candidate. The outcome of the election will have significant implications for Mozambique's security and economic stability. [Extracted from the article]
