Abstract

Nigeria is taking steps to sanction Starlink Inc., Elon Musk's satellite-internet service, for raising its prices without approval from the regulator. Starlink recently increased its monthly subscription rate by nearly double and raised equipment charges by 34%. Nigerian law requires telecommunication license holders to obtain approval before raising tariffs or charges. The Nigerian Communications Commission stated that it has begun pre-enforcement action against Starlink since October 3rd. Starlink claims that its price changes are necessary to match the rate of inflation in Nigeria, which reached a three-decade high of 32.2% in August. The NCC has not allowed tariff increases by mobile phone operators for several years and has previously ordered other companies to reverse price increases. [Extracted from the article]
