Abstract

Mozambicans are voting for a new leader amidst an insurgency that has halted major liquefied natural gas projects. The frontrunner is Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the Liberation Front of Mozambique, which has ruled the country since independence in 1975. The insurgency, backed by Islamic State, has caused delays in gas projects and has been a significant challenge for the government. The election also includes Ossufo Momade, president of the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana party, and Venâncio Mondlane, an independent candidate. The country's high levels of poverty, youth unemployment, and growing debt are additional concerns. Support for democracy has declined in Mozambique, and there were criticisms of irregularities in the 2019 elections. Protests are expected after the vote. [Extracted from the article]
