Abstract

Between 2006 and 2022, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia diagnosed 687 patients with bird-related eye injuries. The most common injuries were non-penetrating and involved the eyelids, cornea, and/or conjunctiva. Magpies were the most frequently identified bird species involved in these injuries. The number of bird-related eye injuries peaked in 2017 and 2018 before decreasing to 2006 levels by 2022. Most swooping bird injury presentations occurred between May and July, suggesting that bird swooping safety campaigns should start earlier in the year. [Extracted from the article]
