Abstract

A recent study analyzed blood samples from individuals who had been infected with the H3N2 strain of influenza. The researchers found that even after the virus had been cleared, there were still changes in the immune system that persisted. These changes were proportional to the severity of the initial infection and included suppressed inflammation, alterations in gene expression, and modifications to the epigenetic landscape in innate immune cells. The study suggests that mild influenza infections can lead to a coordinated rewiring of the immune system. However, it is important to note that this research has not yet undergone peer review.
