Abstract

A report from Sichuan University in China discusses the use of enhanced nanocomposites in sustainable food packaging applications. The researchers found that poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)-based nanocomposites, reinforced with ZnO-coated multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNT-ZnO), exhibited improved mechanical properties, thermal stability, and antibacterial properties. The addition of 0.1 parts per hundred (phr) MWCNT-ZnO optimized the nanocomposites' characteristics, including a 22% increase in tensile strength and a 95.7% enhancement in elongation at break. The study also demonstrated the preservation benefits of these nanocomposites for vegetables and beef packaging. The researchers concluded that PBS/MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposites show promise as sustainable and efficient food packaging materials. [Extracted from the article]
