Abstract

A recent study conducted by Heinrich-Heine-University Dusseldorf in Germany explored the relationship between motivation and chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). The study found that a significant proportion of WAD patients showed signs of altered function in the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) and Behavioral Activation System (BAS), indicating potential changes in reward processing and motivation. However, the study did not confirm a direct link between these alterations and health outcomes. While these findings suggest a subordinate role of altered motivation in chronic WAD, they do highlight associations with pain interference, disability, and mental health measures.
