Abstract

A nationwide study conducted in Turkey aimed to assess the current state of psychosocial services provided to cancer patients and the perspectives of nurses on meeting patients' psychosocial needs. The study involved 1,189 nurses from 32 hospitals across 12 regions in Turkey. The findings revealed that three-quarters of the participants reported their hospitals had psychosocial support services, with psychiatry consultation being the most common service. Organizational conditions were identified as the main barriers to meeting patients' psychosocial needs. Nurses faced difficulties in assessing and intervening in psychosocial needs, particularly in areas such as sexual problems and rejection of treatment. The study suggests the need for better structuring of psychosocial services, improvement in nurse-patient ratios, and enhancement of nurses' psychosocial care capacity. [Extracted from the article]
