Abstract

Top coffee traders, including Sucafina SA, Ecom Agroindustrial Corp., Louis Dreyfus Co., and Cofco International Ltd., have made deals to sell deforestation-free coffee to Europe ahead of the European Union's new deforestation regulation. The regulation, set to take effect in December, requires importers to prove that commodities like coffee do not contribute to deforestation. Despite the lack of details on how to implement the rules and objections from countries like Brazil and Germany, traders are confident that supplies from Brazil and Vietnam can meet the requirements. The deals are for coffee produced in Brazil and Vietnam and are being sold at a premium of 3 to 5 cents to the price of futures traded in New York. [Extracted from the article]
