Abstract

A recent study conducted at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, explored the potential benefits of probiotics in treating acute diverticulitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of a colon diverticulum. The researchers found that probiotics, specifically Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, were effective in reducing inflammation, improving antioxidant status, and decreasing apoptosis in an experimentally induced model of acute diverticulitis in rats. These findings suggest that probiotics may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects and could be a potential treatment option for acute diverticulitis. The study was supported by the Science and Technology Development Fund and the Egyptian Knowledge Bank. [Extracted from the article]
