Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Poland, explores the effect of chronic immunosuppressive therapy on apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the heart of rats. The study found that all immunosuppressive regimens used at therapeutic doses resulted in an increased percentage of cells undergoing apoptosis in rat heart tissue. The greatest changes were observed in rats treated with tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and glucocorticosteroids, while the lowest percentage of apoptotic cells was found in rats treated with rapamycin, tacrolimus, and glucocorticosteroids. The study suggests that chronic immunosuppressive therapy may lead to cardiovascular complications. [Extracted from the article]
