Abstract

A recent report from the University of Basilicata in Potenza, Italy, explores the role of malic enzyme 1 (ME1) in human macrophage activation. Macrophages are important components of the innate immune system, and their activation is associated with metabolic changes. The study found that ME1 is overexpressed in activated macrophages and its transcriptional regulation is controlled by NF-kB. Silencing the ME1 gene was shown to decrease inflammatory mediators, suggesting that modulating ME1 could be a potential approach for regulating macrophage function. This research provides valuable insights into the immunometabolic regulation of macrophages. [Extracted from the article]
