Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at University College Cork in Ireland explored the experiences of autistic mothers receiving maternity care and the experiences of midwives providing care to autistic mothers. The study found that autistic mothers faced unique challenges during labor and birth, including difficulties in communication and distress during physical examinations. The midwives interviewed in the study made efforts to accommodate autistic mothers, but were limited by time and resource constraints. The study highlights the need for increased autism awareness in midwifery and suggests universal changes to the delivery of maternity care that would benefit both autistic and non-autistic women.
