Abstract

A study conducted by researchers from Tulane University examines the experiences of HIV-related stigma and disclosure among adolescents and young adults living with HIV in South Africa. The study found that almost a quarter of the participants reported experiencing HIV-related mistreatment in the past six months. Factors such as poor physical health, missed school due to illness, and knowledge of HIV status by non-family members were significantly associated with HIV-related mistreatment. The researchers suggest that effective community-level stigma reduction interventions are urgently needed, and in the meantime, adolescents require individualized disclosure counseling and support for managing their physical health.
