Abstract

A recent study titled "Transgender earnings gaps in the United States: Evidence from administrative data" examines the economic situation of transgender Americans. The study finds that transgender individuals face disadvantages in the labor market, with transgender men and women experiencing different levels of wage penalties. The research also suggests that hiring discrimination may account for the wage differences between transgender men and nontransgender men. However, the study acknowledges that its findings are based on a sample of individuals who had the resources to change their gender on official government documents, indicating that transgender individuals without such resources may face even worse economic prospects. The authors argue that enhanced labor market protections may benefit transgender Americans. [Extracted from the article]
