Abstract
- Peter Armitage, a renowned statistician, was born in 1924 and passed away in 2024. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and worked with the statistical research unit of the Ministry of Supply during World War II. Armitage's career focused on medical statistics, and he published numerous papers in medical and statistical journals. He made significant contributions to sequential analysis, clinical trials, and statistical methods for biological assays. Armitage held positions at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Oxford, where he established the Department of Statistics. He also authored the widely acclaimed book "Statistical Methods in Medical Research" and co-edited the "Encyclopedia of Biostatistics." Armitage's contributions were recognized through various honors and awards, and he remained active in the field even after retirement.
