Abstract

The article explores the function of dreaming and proposes a new theory that dreams have a group-bonding and empathy function when shared with others. The standard view suggests that dreams serve purposes such as simulating threats or consolidating memories. However, there is no experimental evidence to support these claims. Dream-sharing has been found to have beneficial effects, increasing empathy between individuals. The article suggests that dreams may act as a form of fiction, simulating social experiences and promoting self-disclosure and empathy. Dream-sharing may have evolved as a way to enhance group cohesion and cooperation. Further research is needed to investigate the personal and social benefits of dream-sharing.
