Abstract

Courtney Desiree Morris's book, "To Defend This Sunrise: Black Women's Activism and the Authoritarian Turn in Nicaragua," explores the origins of state violence in Nicaragua and its connection to the colonization of the Caribbean Coast. Morris examines the history of Black women's organizing for regional autonomy and against state violence, starting from the annexation of the Caribbean coast in 1894. The book highlights the participation of Black women in political uprisings, their involvement in diasporic movements, and their role in the Sandinista Revolution and the Contra War. Morris also discusses the failure of successive governments to implement autonomy statutes and the ongoing dispossession of Black and Indigenous territories. In the contemporary context, Black women activists are leading the fight against state violence and advocating for communal justice at various levels. The book provides valuable insights into the struggle against authoritarianism in Nicaragua and beyond. [Extracted from the article]
