Abstract

A recent study conducted by Seoul National University in South Korea explores alternative research methodologies to reduce reliance on live animal testing in the study of gut microbiota in companion animals. The researchers investigated the Fermenter for Intestinal Microbiota Model (FIMM) as a tool to replicate gastrointestinal conditions of living animals. The study found that the FIMM system accurately simulated the intestinal environment and facilitated interactions between probiotics and commensal bacteria, resulting in the production of beneficial bacteria and bacterial metabolites. The research suggests that FIMM presents a viable alternative for examining gut microbiota and metabolites in companion animals. [Extracted from the article]
