Abstract
- A recent study conducted by the University of California, Riverside, has found that men who have an unhealthy, high-cholesterol diet can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in their daughters. This is the first study to demonstrate this result specifically in female offspring. The research suggests that environmental exposures, such as an unhealthy diet, can alter the RNA in sperm, which can then affect the health of future generations. The study focused on atherosclerosis, a leading cause of CVD, and found that small RNA molecules in sperm undergo alterations in response to a high-cholesterol diet. The researchers are unsure why only female offspring are affected and hope that their findings will encourage further investigations into the impact of paternal exposures on cardiovascular health in humans.
