Abstract
- The Centre for Research and Innovation for Black Survivors of Homicide Victims (The CRIB) is calling for action to address the grief from homicide that disproportionately affects Black communities worldwide. In a paper published in the journal Homicide Studies, the authors argue that the prevalence and spread of homicide grief in Black communities can be viewed as a pandemic, with structural racism and systemic inequalities underlying its pervasiveness. The paper recommends a comprehensive public health framework that incorporates anti-Black racism to address the trauma from this kind of loss and reduce homicide rates. The authors also highlight the need for culturally responsive support services and improved access to mental health care and grief counseling for Black communities. The paper cites statistics showing the disproportionate impact of homicide on Black communities in Canada and the US, and emphasizes the urgent need for a public health response to address the crisis of homicide grief.
