Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute in Greifswald, Germany, has investigated the virome of European white-toothed shrews. The study found moderate to high abundances of sequences related to the families Paramyxoviridae, Nairoviridae, Hepeviridae, and Bornaviridae. Whole genomes were determined for novel orthoparamyxoviruses, orthonairoviruses, and an orthohepevirus. The study highlights the diversity of viruses present in shrews and the potential transmission routes. Further research is needed to characterize these viruses, assess their clinical implications, and understand the role of shrews as reservoirs in European ecosystems. [Extracted from the article]
