Abstract

A recent study conducted at the Hospital for Sick Children has investigated the influence of mesenchymal and biophysical components on the differentiation of distal lung organoids derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). The researchers found that co-developing mesenchymal progenitors promote the differentiation of alveolar epithelial type 2 cells (AEC2) within the organoids. Additionally, they discovered that mechanical deformation of the organoids, mimicking fetal respiratory movements, increased AEC2 differentiation without affecting proximal epithelial differentiation. These findings suggest that both biophysical and mesenchymal components play a role in promoting AEC2 differentiation in hPSC-derived distal organoids in vitro. [Extracted from the article]
