Abstract

The article discusses the importance of CEOs having a background in supply chain management (SCM) to build resilience in their companies. While most CEOs come from finance, strategy, or technology backgrounds, a small but growing group of CEOs have experience in SCM. Recent global events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical disruptions, have highlighted the value of CEOs with SCM expertise in handling supply chain challenges. The article analyzes the career trajectories of S&P 500 CEOs and finds that CEOs with SCM experience mention supply chain-related terminology more often in their annual reports and are more effective in maintaining profitability levels during disruptions. The article concludes with recommendations for organizations to develop SCM expertise among future CEOs. [Extracted from the article]
