Abstract

Excess dietary sodium consumption is a leading risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In Nigeria, where over 27 million people are affected by hypertension, the average daily salt intake exceeds the World Health Organization's recommendation. The Nigeria Sodium Study (NaSS) was established to evaluate the implementation and scale-up of policy actions to reduce salt intake in Nigeria. Preliminary findings from the NaSS suggest that Nigerian adults consume twice the recommended level of daily sodium, with bouillon emerging as a major source. The study also highlights the importance of multi-sectoral engagement and high-quality data for evidence-informed policymaking. [Extracted from the article]
