Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at KIIT University in India explores the relationship between cervical inflammation, Pap smear changes, and infertility in women. The study found that reproductive tract infections can lead to marked cervical inflammation, which can be detected through Pap smears. The researchers observed that almost 50% of women with inflammatory smears had infections, with candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis being the most common. Additionally, the study found that women with Pap smear changes had a significantly lower conception rate, even with assisted reproductive technology. The researchers recommend that Pap smears be conducted in all cases of infertility to identify infections and inflammation, and follow-up high vaginal swab cultures should be done when inflammation is detected.
