Abstract
- A recent report from Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, discusses the characteristics of adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATLL), an aggressive T-cell neoplasm caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). The study analyzed 131 patients with ATLL and found that the most common immunophenotype was CD4+/CD7-/CD25+, although unusual phenotypes were also observed. Cytogenetic abnormalities and gene mutations were identified, including TP53, TBL1XR1, EP300, and NOTCH1. The researchers emphasize the importance of HTLV-1 testing to avoid underdiagnosis and recommend aggressive chemotherapy followed by bone marrow transplant for patients with ATLL.
