Abstract

A new study conducted by the Department of Neurology and Stroke Center has found that atrial fibrillation (AF) and high burden of ectopic atrial activity (HBEA) are common in patients with cryptogenic stroke. The study analyzed the frequency of AF and HBEA in patients with cryptogenic stroke and assessed their atrial function and 1-year outcomes. The results showed that AF is strongly related to left atrial (LA) volume, LA function, and LA reservoir and contraction strain, while HBEA showed milder structural changes. The study suggests that advanced LA echocardiography could help in selecting patients for long-term ECG monitoring in suspected cardiac sources. [Extracted from the article]
