Abstract

A recent report from Universitas Udayana in Bali, Indonesia highlights the emergence of meningitis caused by the zoonotic bacteria Streptococcus suis as a significant public health concern. The study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of S. suis isolates in Bali through both phenotypic and genetic means. The results showed that all isolates exhibited phenotypic resistance to tetracycline, with one isolate also demonstrating co-resistance to erythromycin/clindamycin. The research suggests that the extensive use of tetracycline and the horizontal acquisition of the genetic element Tn916 with tetM may have influenced the pathogenicity and widespread dissemination of S. suis in the community.
