Abstract

Zr-based metallic glass ribbons were interposed between stainless steel and titanium plates during dissimilar resistance spot welding. Upon welding, resistance heat caused the glass ribbons transition to a supercooled liquid state. By electrode force applied, the excess supercooled liquid was expelled from the nugget. The minimal supercooled liquid remaining in the nugget separated the two plates during welding, resulting in high reproducibility of mechanical properties in the dissimilar welding of stainless steel and titanium plates.
