Abstract

This article provides an overview of the gold coinage in Russia from 1825 to 1855 under the rule of Nicholas I. The aim was to transition from paper money to the silver standard, which was achieved through the introduction of platinum coinage in 1828 and the elimination of paper money in 1839. The discovery of gold in Siberia in the 1840s ensured a sufficient supply for coinage. The article discusses the design changes of the gold coins, including the incorporation of coats-of-arms from different regions. It also mentions the rarity of proof coins from this period and provides information on the half imperial coins, including a special commemorative coin from 1832 made with gold from the Kolyvan district in Siberia. The article briefly touches on counterfeit Dutch ducats and 3-ruble gold coins. [Extracted from the article]
