Abstract

A study conducted in Seoul, South Korea investigated the clinical features and visual outcomes of infectious keratitis associated with Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lens in Korean pediatric patients. The study reviewed medical records of 26 patients diagnosed with Ortho-K lens-associated infectious keratitis. The majority of cases occurred in the summer, and central or paracentral corneal lesions were observed in most cases. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most commonly isolated organism. All patients responded to medical treatment without needing surgery, but some experienced residual central corneal opacities. Factors such as non-summer seasons, duration from symptom onset to presentation, and corneal epithelial defect size were associated with final visual outcomes. The study concluded that proper education and early detection are important for the safe use of Ortho-K lenses in pediatric patients. [Extracted from the article]
