Abstract

A rapid assessment of mortality surveillance in Uganda was conducted from November 2023 to June 2024. The assessment aimed to identify gaps in the mortality surveillance system and provide recommendations for improvement. The assessment found that 66.9% of deaths occur in communities, but there are data completeness gaps in feeding this information into the national health statistics database. Issues with data quality were also identified in health facility-generated data. Despite these challenges, the assessment highlights opportunities for improved mortality surveillance in Uganda through the adoption of strategies such as strengthening governance, raising awareness, and improving resource allocation.
