Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of Maryland Medical Center has shed light on the rare but life-threatening condition of starvation ketoacidosis in pregnant patients. The study focused on a 35-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted for abdominal pain and diagnosed with perforated appendicitis. During the procedure, she was found to have an anion gap metabolic acidosis and was treated with a dextrose infusion and insulin. The researchers emphasized the importance of carbohydrate administration in the treatment of starvation ketoacidosis in pregnancy. Further research is needed to establish optimal management strategies for this condition. [Extracted from the article]
