Abstract

Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine have conducted a study on Niemann-Pick disease type C1 (NPC1), a rare neurodegenerative disorder. The study used metabolomics to identify elevated levels of three alkyl-lysophosphatidylcholine (alkyl-LPC) species in NPC1 compared to controls across various tissues. The researchers also found that alkyl-LPC levels were reduced following treatment with 2-hydroxypropyl-b-cyclodextrin (HPbCD) in a feline model of NPC1. Additionally, the study identified LPC O-16:0 and LPC O-18:1 as potential biomarkers for tracking treatment response in NPC1 patients. [Extracted from the article]
