Abstract
- A recent study by the British Ecological Society found that 1 in 6 banknotes from 207 countries feature wildlife. The study examined banknotes issued from 1980 to 2017 and identified 352 species from 883 depictions on 689 notes. Birds and mammals were the most commonly depicted animals, and approximately 30 percent of the identified species are threatened with extinction. While portraying endangered animals on currency does not guarantee their protection, previous studies have shown that it can raise public awareness and strengthen national identity.
