Abstract

A patent application has been submitted for a method and apparatus to prevent vaginal lacerations during childbirth. The application proposes the use of a vaginal dilation device to gently expand and condition the lower vagina in preparation for childbirth, potentially reducing the risk of injury and shortening labor duration. The device is inserted into the vagina during the first stage of labor and gradually expanded to a selected diameter. The expansion is paused periodically to allow the tissue to expand, and then resumed until the desired diameter is reached. The device includes arms and pads that move outward and can be quickly reduced in diameter using a quick-release mechanism. The patent application provides detailed information on the design and operation of the expansion device. [Extracted from the article]
