Abstract

A recent study conducted at San Diego State University focused on a case of suspected Childhood Apraxia of Sign (CASign) in a 4-year-old deaf child named Zoe. The researchers found that Zoe's sign articulation errors in American Sign Language were similar to those observed in hearing children with childhood apraxia of speech. These errors included inconsistency, substitution of complex handshapes for simple ones, errors on both common and less common forms, articulatory distortions, and "groping" behaviors. The study suggests that Zoe's pattern of sign errors may indicate an underlying deficit in motor planning and/or programming, potentially making her the first reported case of CASign.
