Abstract
- A report from Wuhan University in the People's Republic of China discusses the role of P21-activated kinase 1 (Pak1) in cell apoptosis, particularly in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The study found that the expression of Pak1 increased in VSMCs when exposed to H2O2 and that Pak1 knockdown increased VSMC apoptosis and inhibited proliferation. Additionally, Pak1 knockdown reduced the phosphorylation of Bad, a protein involved in apoptosis. The research suggests that Pak1 may be a novel regulator of VSMC apoptosis through the phosphorylation of Bad. This study has been peer-reviewed and published in the American Journal of Hypertension.
