Abstract

A recent report from the Medical College of Wisconsin discusses a case involving a patient with a HeartMate 3 left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The patient experienced a disconnection of the device's bend relief, which caused a laceration of the outflow graft. This resulted in a left chest hematoma and exsanguinating hemorrhage. The patient underwent emergency surgery to repair the graft and remove the disconnected bend relief. This is the first reported case of this specific malfunction in the HeartMate 3 LVAD.
