Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Arizona State University found that swapping in foods made from refined corn flour with added corn bran can lower LDL cholesterol concentrations by 5% to 13.3% in just four weeks. The study compared the impact of whole-grain corn meal, refined corn meal, and a blend of refined corn meal and corn bran, and found that 70% of participants saw significant reductions in LDL cholesterol concentrations when consuming the blend. The study also found that there were no significant changes to gut microbiota diversity during the interventions. The study was funded by the Corn Division of the North American Millers' Association and can be found in the Journal of Nutrition. [Extracted from the article]
