Abstract

This article discusses Ken Smith's freelanced HO scale model railroad, the South Durham Ry. (SDR), which is built in a spare room in his home. The layout represents central North Carolina in the 1970s and features a small town with rail-served industries. The construction of the layout began in 2019 and includes a high ornamental shelf for displaying equipment not in use. The track is Atlas code 83 flextrack, and the scenery consists of various ground covers and structures. Ken operates the layout using Digital Command Control (DCC) and plans to expand it in the future. He emphasizes the importance of building a layout that can be completed and maintained, as well as being open to learning and seeking help. [Extracted from the article]
