Abstract

A clinical trial, NCT06529237, is underway in Mozambique to enhance Molecular Malaria Surveillance (MMS) in order to effectively control and potentially eliminate malaria. Mozambique has a high malaria burden, with varying levels of transmission throughout the country. The trial aims to integrate MMS into the National Malaria Control Program's strategic cycle and assess the effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests, antimalarials, and other interventions. The trial will monitor molecular markers of antimalarial resistance, genetic diversity of the parasite population, and sources of transmission. The goal is to optimize the public health benefits of the program and make informed decisions regarding antimalarial tools. This document provides an overview of a research project focused on malaria surveillance and control in Mozambique, including activities such as tracing transmission sources, developing tools to estimate malaria burden, monitoring vaccine resistance, and modeling malaria incidence. The project also emphasizes the integration of genetic data into existing systems, communication and collaboration among stakeholders, capacity building, quality control measures, and gender equity. The study is currently recruiting participants and is expected to be completed by March 2027. [Extracted from the article]
