Abstract
- The article explores citizens' creation and knowledge of the sensory environment in town and city centres in Great Britain during the mid-20th century as a vital part of urban history. It describes the sources used to study the citizen experience in the central streets, including oral histories, autobiographies, surveys and social media. It discusses the emotional responses of citizens to being in close contact with other people in crowds on busy streets.
