Abstract

This article is a book review of "Stranieri nemici: Nazionalismo e politiche di sicurezza in Italia durante la Prima guerra mondiale" by Daniela Luigia Caglioti. The book explores the treatment of enemy aliens in Italy during World War I. It discusses the Germanophobia in the ultra-nationalist press, the government's efforts to "Italianize" the economy, and the relationship between public opinion and official measures. The review highlights the distortion of propaganda and the relatively small number of enemy aliens in Italy. It also mentions the lack of comprehensive internment camps and the discrimination faced by Swiss minorities. The book provides valuable insights into the history of Italy's treatment of ethnic minorities and the rise of nationalism and xenophobia. [Extracted from the article]
