Abstract

According to the Washington, D.C.-based Organic Trade Association, organic produce sales make up approximately 15% of all U.S. fruit and vegetable revenues, despite the rising cost. This ongoing demand for organic and sustainable fruits and vegetables presents growth opportunities for produce retailers. To meet consumer standards, retailers must prioritize minimal use of synthetic pesticides, locally sourced items, eco-friendly packaging, fair trade and ethical practices, and transparent product origins and production methods. However, efficiently sourcing and marketing organic and sustainable produce can be challenging due to coordination with multiple suppliers, maintaining organic certifications, ensuring consistent quality and freshness, and balancing affordability with higher operating expenses. Building consumer trust and educating shoppers about the value and impact of these products is crucial. Establishing long-term relationships with sustainable suppliers and informing consumers about the benefits of purchasing organic produce can enhance operations and meet the growing mainstream expectation for organic and sustainable options.
