Abstract

Labour Day is more than just a holiday for barbecues and family outings; it is a time to celebrate the achievements of workers and recognize the ongoing importance of the labour movement. The holiday originated in the late 19th century as a result of the labour movement's advocacy for better working conditions, fair wages, and reasonable hours. Unions have played a crucial role in securing benefits and protections for workers, such as the eight-hour workday, weekends, paid leave, and safe working conditions. They also advocate for fair wages, benefits, and workplace safety. Despite the progress made, unions remain relevant in addressing new challenges in the evolving labour market, such as job insecurity and exploitation in the gig economy. Labour Day serves as a reminder of the contributions of workers and the vital role of unions in shaping fair and just labour practices. It is important to support policies that protect workers' rights and recognize the importance of unions in our society. [Extracted from the article]
