Abstract
- Despite obvious gravitation towards child adoption in recent times, resistance to the practice is still strong among Igbos in southern Nigeria. The paper explains this resistance from the Igbo cultural orientation of the past, which survives in the present, and the socio-economic realities of contemporary times. It demonstrates how the Igbo socio-cultural contexts provide both a formidable force against the identity of the adopted and a basis to contest against such for socio-economic privileges in the contemporary context. The paper further explains the implications of this development – a gradual creation of a new group of the Igbo with unshared identity in urban centers, who unlike the conventional migrant Igbo, has little or no link with the 'traditional homeland'.
